September 6, 2012

New Kobo DevicesKobo has today announced 3 new devices.  One is a  replacement for an existing product: the Kobo Arc which replaces the Kobo Vox and two brand new ones: the Kobo Glo and Kobo Mini.  With Amazon due to announce a new line up of Kindles tomorrow, it looks like Kobo is trying to steal a march on them.

Kobo Mini

This is a mini eReader and is being marketed as the world’s smallest and lightest electronic reading device.  The screen is 5″ and is available as a Wi-Fi only model.  As with previous Kobos it is available in a number of colors: blue, purple, pink, gray and black.  You can link your Kobo account to your Facebook Timeline and Reading Life allows you to learn about your reading habits.

Technical specs include: a 800MHz processor, 2GB of storage, 5″ Vizplex V110 eInk touch screen,134g and a two week battery life.  It will be available shortly for $79.99

Kobo Glo

The Glo is Kobo’s answer to the Nook GlowLight.   It comes with an integrated light to help you read in the dark or in low light situations – perfect for reading in bed then.  It has a reported run time of 55 hours with the light on all the time.  The Comfortlight is a front-lit light and directs the light evenly across the page.  It is also adjustable.  Available in four colors: blue, read, gray and balck.  Using an advanced high-res XGA screen means that there’s no glare even in strong sunlight and TypeGenius allows you to create your own ideal reading experience.

Technical specs include: a 1GHz processor, 2 GB storage (expandable to 32GB), 6″ eInk XGA Pearl screen, weighs 185g and has a 1 month battery life.  It will be available shortly for $129.99

Kobo Arc

The final product is a replacement to their 7″ tablet – the Kobo Vox.  The Kobo Arc is a significant upgrade to the Vox and features are a more powerful processor, double the RAM, higher resolution screen, longer battery life and a HD front facing camera.  The Vox was severely under powered when compared to the Nexus 7 & Kindle Fire, so this should at least address the balance a bit.

The Arc comes with a 1.5 dual core processor, 1GB RAM, 7″ IPS display (1280 x 800), 2 megapixel HD front facing camera, Android 4 and comes in 8GB and 16GB flavors and is available in black or white.  It will be available shortly from $199.99
